We beat the 48+ Athletics 24-10. Click here for highlights.
We lost both games of our doubleheader with the Diamondbacks.
Denny Brown struggled through 5 innings in the first game. Dutch Van Wey pitched the 6th. We lost 13-3.
Zach Jones and Phil Montes split the second game. Our defense continued to betray us. We kept coming back offensively though. Final score was 15-13.
More when I can...
We went 3-1 in the Carl Flowers Memorial Tournament in Woodland-Davis on Labor Day weekend. Our quest for a 4-peat was denied by the Tri-Valley Diamondbacks, who beat us 8-5 in the semi-final game on Monday morning.
We opened the tournament by beating the Sacramento Solons 17-5.
In Sunday's first game, we hung on to beat the Sacramento Silver Sox 7-6. In the second game on Sunday, we beat the Tri-Valley Diamondbacks 8-2.
We played the Diamondbacks in a rematch on Monday morning in the semi-finals of the tournament. We came back from an 8-2 deficit in the bottom of the ninth, scoring three and getting the tying run to the plate, but came up short, losing 8-5.
The TV Tigers also went 3-0 in the round robin. They beat the Dragons 6-3 in the other semi-final game.
The Tigers bombed the Diamondbacks 18-4 in the final at Steelhead Stadium in Vacaville.

We won another split doubleheader. In the morning game, we beat the Ports 5-3 in a TV 48+ game. In the afternoon game, we beat Westside 11-8 in our final Norcal game.
We finished the Norcal season above .500, or exactly at .500 if you include the Norcal Tournament.
We went 1-2 in the Norcal Tournament and failed to make the playoffs.
We beat Tracy in the opener, 20-4.
We lost 13-12 to Lodi in the second game. The game was tied 12-12 after 7 innings, so the 'Texas Shoot-out" rules were invoked. We failed to score in the top of the eighth; Lodi scored in the bottom to take the win.
In the Sunday game, we lost 7-4 to Watsonville.
We beat Lodi in a Norcal game 13-8.
We beat San Leandro on Sunday, 9-5, extending our winning streak to 5 games. This brings us up to an even .500 for the season!!
Rod Colvard went all 9 innings. Although he walked 11, he managed to escape big innings by getting out of trouble with men on base. We scored 7 runs in the second inning to give him a lead and then hung on for the win. All 7 runs in the sedond scored after two were out. Rod and Gus Manning walked. Rod scored when a pickoff attempt on Gus at first went into right field. Then Sandy Speier, Augie Torres, Danny Moore, and Phil Montes got consecutive base hits. This loaded the bases with 3 already across. Tom Squier stroked a double to left center, clearing the bases. On the next pitch, Zack Jones's base hit plated Tom.

We won another doubleheader on Sunday. In the morning game, we beat the Yankees. I don't have the exact score, because we had nobody to keep the book in the bottom of the eighth. We led 17-16 going into the bottom of the 7th. The Yankees opened the 7th with a base hit. After two forceouts at second, their leadoff hitter tried to steal second. Robin South's throw easily beat the runner who then tried to run over Art White. The runner was called out, but Artie's shoulder was dislocated. In the top of the eighth, we struck back for 8 runs. One of the outs in that inning was Art's spot, since we had nobody on the bench. We got out of the bottom of the eighth, but I don't know if we gave up any more runs. Rena took Art to the emergency room, so we didn't even have Rena's book to fall back on.
In the afternoon game, Rod Colvard and Sam Modrall combined for a 10-9 win over Tracy. We got ahead early and held off an eighth-inning rally capped by Dean ??''s 3-run HR.

We won both games on Sunday!! In the morning game, we beat the 48+ Athletics 19-8. In the afternoon game, we beat Tracy 22-21. We played the second game with wood bats, so that kept the scoring down!
We had only 9 guys for the morning game. We jumped out to an early lead and were up 18-3 after 6 innings. But we couldn't hold the 15-run lead necessary for the mercy rule to kick in. The A's scored 4 in the top of the 7th to keep us playing for another inning before time expired.
We added two fresh guys for the afternoon game (Sam Modrall and Augie Torres). But two guys had to leave (Dave Distad and Dutch Van Wey), so again we had to play with 9. Tracy put up 7 runs in the second, but we answered with 6 of our own in the bottom to tie it up at 7-7 after 2. We went ahead in the middle innings and took a 14-10 lead into the 7th. Tracy scored 3 in the top of the seventh and we answered with 3 in the bottom. In the top of the ninth, Tracy put up 8 runs capped by a grand-slam home run by Tony ??. That put them ahead 21-17. But again we came back. Sandy Speier's bases-loaded double over a shallow outfield drove in Robin and Denny with the 4th and 5th runs of the inning.

We squeaked out another Norcal win on Sunday. Final score was Antiques 8 - Fairfield 5. The game was tight all the way. The combination of good pitching and wood bats kept the score down.
In the top of the first, Bert Rodrigues walked and ended up scoring when Bill Wyman's popup got lost in the sun. That was the only scoring for the first four innings as Clyde Jones and Rod Colvard locked up in a pitchers' duel. Rod escaped a bases-loaded jam in the second, walking three and striking out two. Fairfield broke through for 4 runs in the fifth. Matt Mullany led off with a base hit. After another walk to Rodrigues, Codany Holiday stroked a triple to right center. Rod got a K for the first out, but Wyman hit towering drive to right that went for another triple. He scored on an infield out to put Fairfield up 5-0.
We started our comeback in the bottom of the fifth. Art White drew a walk and Gus Manning followed with a single. With one out, Joel Weinstein broke the ice for us with a single to right driving in Artie. With two outs, Danny Moore stroked a single to drive in Gus. Sam Modrall relieved Rod in the top of the sixth.
Sam, Zach Jones, and Robin South singled to lead off the sixth. After Art's walk loaded the bases we were in a great spot to tie the game up. But Gus's bid for a line drive base hit down the third base line was snagged by Steve ?? who was able to double off Zach after a diving stop. Clyde was able to escape with only one run's damage.
In the seventh, we were able to break through for 5 runs. Sandy Speier drew a walk. Denny Brown popped a hit-and-run single to right to put runners at the corners. Fairfield's center fielder almost robbed Bill Jones on his liner to center but the ball dropped in and Sandy scored. Danny's Texas leaguer fell in to load the bases. Duane Fountain stroked a solid double to left to put us ahead for the first time in the game. Danny scored on a wild pitch and Duane scored on Artie's infield chopper, and we were ahead 8-5.
Meanwhile, Sam shut down the Fairfield offense with 4 no-hit innings. Two Antiques' errors provided the only Fairfield baserunners in the last four innings.

On Fathers' Day, the Norcal League held a "Father-Son Baseball Day". Over 60 players signed up, so we formed 6 teams and played 3 seven-inning games. Denny Brown, Dave Distad, and Bill Jones of the Antiques combined with Steve LaFirenza and Rod Freitas from Westside to form the "father" contingent on one of the teams. Sons were Pat Brown, Eric Distad, Brian and Eric Jones, and Steve LaFirenza Jr. (Rod's son, who is in the armed forces, was not able to play.) Steve LaFirenza sent some pictures. I'm working on putting them up here. Pix under construction.
The Antiques/Westside team played against a combined Watsonville/Tracy group. Other games were San Leandro & San Jose vs. Contra Costa, and Lodi & Fairfield vs. Benicia. The games were played in Benicia at Benicia High and Fitzgerald field.
We turned things around from last weekend. This time we swept a doubleheader from Watsonville, 4-3 and 10-9.
I'll add the highlights when I have time. Short summary: Tied 3-3 in the top of the sixth of the first game, Tom Squier stroked a two-out double. Robin South followed with a base hit and Tom scored on a close play at the plate. Sam Modrall got the complete-game win. In the second game, we were down 9-8 going into the bottom of the sixth. Gus Manning led off with a base hit and Danny Moore hit a two-run HR to put us up 10-9. Rich Martinez got a base hit in the seventh, but Rod Colvard stranded him at first, going the distance for the win.

After being off for nearly a month, we played lousy on Sunday against Modesto. We lost a double-header, 11-6 in the first game and 10-2 in the second.
We started well in the first game. We turned a double play in the top of the first to get out of the inning. Then we scored 3 in the bottom via 5 walks and hit batter. Modesto got one back in the third when Jim DeWitt walked, stole second, and scored on Mike McCann's 400 foot ground rule double. We took the 3-1 lead into the fourth inning. Then the roof caved in. Denny Brown watched as a dribbler down the third base line didn't kick foul. Then a hit batter and three walks tied the score at 3-3. Sam Modrall replaced Rod Colvard with two outs and the bases loaded. Sam couldn't put out the fire, though and Modesto ended up scoring 7 to take an 8-3 lead.
We scored 3 in the sixth to get close at 9-6. Phil Montes walked, stole second and wet to third when the throw went into center. Phil scored on Danny Moore's base hit. Danny scored on Sam's double off the wall in left center. Sam scored on Zach's base hit.

In the second game, Modesto struck first on Greg ??'s HR. We came back with two in the bottom. Sam drove in Phil with a base hit. Danny scored on Robin South's sacrifice fly. Modesto got those two back in the second to go back ahead 3-2. Roger Strack struggled in the third, giving up 5 before Phil came in with two outs. Phil only faced one batter, though. Greg stroked his second HR of the game and third of the doubleheader to finish the scoring.
We called the second game off after three innings. We didn't know it earlier, but there was another doubleheader scheduled on the field. We decided to let them have the field instead of finishing out our game.

Well, after all the arrangments and re-arrangements, all the phone calls and emails, we ended up with 9 guys at each game. And both games were rained out. So there's no news this week.
I don't know when or if the games will be rescheduled.
We broke into the Norcal win column with a 5-1 victory against Westside. Sam Modrall pitched a great game for us, we played good defense, and scratched out enough runs to secure the win.
We jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Danny Moore opened with a double. Phil Montes' infield hit put runners on the corners. Phil and Danny then executed a double-steal to get us the first run. Zach Jones drove in Phil with RBI single. Sam Modrall's double kept the inning going. Zach was out at the plate on Robin South's grounder. Denny Brown then drove in the third run of the inning with a hit-and-run single to right.
We put Sam in hot water in the third by making a couple of errors. But Sam and Art White combined to pick off a runner at second with the bases loaded and one out. Sam got the hitter to fly out to center to escape the inning. In the fourth, a hit and a walk put runners on first and second. Rod Freitas stroked a single to center, but Rod Colvard made a strong throw to the plate to nail Chris Verges for the first out of the inning. Then Sam got greedy and tried for another pickoff. This time, the ball went into right field and Robert Garcia scored from second.
We put up a couple of insurance runs in the eighth. Robin walked. Denny and Robin pulled another hit-and-run play to put runners on first and second. Art's base hit loaded the bases. With one out, Sal beat out a potential double-play grounder. Frank Bower, running for Denny, and Art both scored on the play.
Sam found a way to wriggle out of trouble in the late innings. The game ended when Chris Verges tried to stretch a deep double to right center into a triple. A perfect relay from Rod to Tom Squier to Denny cut him down and set both teams off to the feed.

We lost again to Benicia on Sunday, 12-4. Sam Peterson and Roger Yokoi combined to hold the Antiques offense in check.
Phil Montes started the game for us and had a shaky first inning. After an error, a hit, and a walk, Larry Friel drove in two runs with a line drive just over the shortstop. A third run scored on an infield out. Phil got out of the inning with a double-play on a comebacker to the mound.
Denny Brown led off the bottom of the second with a base hit. Duane Fountain's hit and stolen base put runners on second and third. Gus Manning and Art White each drove in a run with a base hit.
Phil blanked the bad guys until Yokoi stroked a solo HR in the fifth. We got that run back in the bottom of the inning. Art and Danny Moore got base hits. Art scored on a balk. Benicia continued to chip away by scoring at least one run in each of the last 5 innings, aided by 3 more Antiques errors.
Duane manufactured our final run in the ninth. With two out, he reached on an error, stole second and third, and scored on an overthrow at third.

We lost to San Leandro on Friday night, 19-11. The game was a sloppy one for both teams. Combined, the two teams issued 21 walks and committed 15 errors.
San Leandro scored two in the first on a walk, Ed Bull's triple, and a groundout. We came right back with a 4-run second. Danny Moore's two-run single with two outs drove in the go-ahead runs after a walk and 4 San Leandro errors got the inning started. The lead didn't last long, though. An error and 4 walks in the bottom of the second left the game tied at 4-4.
San Leandro again took the lead with two runs in the third on two walks and two singles. With runners on second and third and nobody out, Rod Colvard pitched out of the jam by getting a popup, a strikeout, and a groundout to escape further damage. In the top of the fifth, Burlin Germany led off with a single. Danny got hit and Phil Montes walked to load the bases. But all we could get were two runs when San Leandro botched Zach Jones' double-play grounder, allowing Burlin and Danny to score. We were back even at 6-6.
Rod ran out of gas in the fifth. After two walks, two hits, and an error scored 3, Denny came in. Another run scored after an error, and then another on an infield out. A two-out single by Tony Jackson scored two more to bring the inning to a close with 7 runs.
San Leandro added another unearned run in the sixth to push the lead up to 14-6. We got 3 gift runs back in the eighth on a walk and two errors.
Doug Potestio's 3 run HR in the eighth finished a 5-run inning for San Leandro. This time all the runs were earned.
The game reverted to form in the top of the ninth. We loaded the bases when Sandy Speier got hit, Burlin walked, and Danny got an infield hit. Phil's two-out ground ball scored the final two runs when the ball was thrown away at first.
The only consolation was that the score could have been worse. The teams each stranded 10 runners. It all made for a pretty ugly line score.

We split our doubleheader with the Ports yesterday.
We lost the first game 6-4. The Ports combined good pitching and defense with some timely hitting to hang on for the win. Zach Jones pitched a great game for us and didn't deserve to lose. But we couldn't capitalize on the few opportunities we had offensively.
The Ports opened the scoring in the first on a double and a single leading off the game. They scored again in the third after a hit batter scored on a two-out single. We came back in the fourth when Phil Montes walked, stole second, moved up on a wild pitch, and scored on Zach's two-out base hit.
The Ports added another single run in the fifth after an errant pick-off at first moved the runner up to third. He scored on another two-out base hit. In the top of the sixth, Zach got the first two outs, but then gave up a walk and a base hit. Denny Brown came in and gave up a two-run double before getting the last out.
We had our best opportunity in the bottom of the sixth. Art White got a one-out hit and stole second. With two out, Phil got a base hit to drive in Art. Tom Squier's hit put runners on the corners. Tom stole second. Zach's base hit drove in Phil and put the tying run on base. Robin South got hit by a pitch to load the bases. Denny hit what looked like a base hit to right center, but Al Hillman made a diving catch in right-center to keep the Ports ahead 5-3.
The Ports added an insurance run in the top of the seventh without a hit.We came back in the bottom. Bill Jones got a base hit. Gus Manning and Joel Weinstein drew walks to load the bases with one out. Their center fielder chased down Art White's deep drive to center, holding us to one run on the sac fly. Gus moved up to third. Frank Bower, running for Joel, stole second. But that was all we could manage, and the game ended 6-4.

We won the second game 11-3. Phil Montes pitched well and we got some key RBIs at the right time.
The Ports got two in the bottom of the first on two hits, a walk, and an error. We got those right back in the top of the second. Denny led off with a base hit. Robin, running for Denny stole second and scored on Art's double. Billy's base hit tied it up.
We got ahead for good with a 4-spot in the third. Phil and Tom started things with hits. Zach's sac fly scored the first run of the inning. Robin and Art each got rbi singles. Billy capped the scoring with a double.
In the fourth, Joel walked and moved up on Dave Distad's hit. Danny Moore got a hit to load the bases. Phil drew a walk for one run, and Danny later scored to put us ahead 8-2. Meanwhile Phil was cruising, scattering two hits a three walks from the second to the sixth.
Joel started another rally in the sixth with a walk. Danny's walk and Phil's hit loaded the bases with two out. Tom stroked a bases-clearing double to put us up 11-2.
Phil started to struggle in the bottom of the seventh. After hitting his second batter, we went to Tom to close things out. Tom's first pitching outing since high school was a good one. He allowed one run to score on a hit, but got a popup and groundout to send us home with a split.

Next up for Norcal is Sunday, April 14 in Benicia. Next up for TriValley is a doubleheader against the Ports at Los Medanos College on Sunday, April 21.
Last week we added information on the playing fields we will use this year to our website. Check it out and let me know if you have questions, additions, or suggested improvements to that page. You can also get to that page from the "Directions to fields" link on the Antiques' home page.
Both March 17 games were cancelled. Clyde was unable to secure a field for the Norcal game in Fairfield. The TriValley game was rained out.
The bad luck continued on the weekend of March 24. Our doubleheader in Modesto was also rained out.
Easter weekend was beautiful, but we had nothing scheduled, of course.
We have the schedule for the TriValley 48+ team. See the "Team Info" page for the latest info.
Sal and Denny played in the Las Vegas 48+ Kickoff Classic with Clyde Jones's Norcal team. We went 1-3. We lost to the Atlanta Diamondbacks (Gary Gwaltney's team) on Friday night. We lost to the Arizona 50's (the guys we have played in Phoenix many times, Rick Mullins, Chuck Brockman, etc.) on Saturday morning. On Sunday morning, we beat a team from Denver. We shouldn't have made the playoffs, but the eighth seed dropped out, so they put us in. We lost Sunday afternoon to the Seattle Raniers (many of the same guys as the Puget Sound White Sox team that we played in Florida a couple of years ago and last year in Las Vegas.)
No game on Sunday, March 10. Denny and Sal will be in Las Vegas with Clyde's team. We play at Fairfield on Sunday, March 17.
We're looking forward to a great season of baseball in 2002!! We are planning lots of changes this year.
