We opened the season against San Jose on Sunday, March 3. The weather was GREAT! But San Jose beat us 12-3.
We got a run in the top of the first. Danny Moore got a base hit and stole second. Danny moved up to third when Sam bounced one up the middle. Steve Kleszewski made a nice play to throw Sam out. Tom Squier stroked a double to left center to drive in the season's first run.
Rod Colvard started for us and had an easy first inning. San Jose got even in the bottom of the second on an infield hit. (We thought it was a groundout, but the ump called it safe.) A couple of wild-pitch/passed-balls netted the run. Things unraveled for Rod in the third. Some shaky defense, 4 walks, and a 3-run double led to 5 runs. Denny Brown came in and got the final out of the third.
We got 2 back in the top of the 4th. Phil walked, stole second and took third on the throw into center. Sam walked. Then Sam and Phil executed the double-steal for the first run. Zach drove in Sam for the second one.
Denny couldn't hold them in the bottom, though. 5 singles and a walk led to 5 runs, putting us behind 11-3.
Phil Montes gave up an un-earned run in the sixth. Sam went the last two and didn't give up anything.
We were only able to get one hit per inning for the 5th through the 9th. That wasn't enough to break through for any runs.
