We beat the Dragons 14-13. The win was good, but we lost Bobby Scott to a season-ending injury. As Bobby said, "Bummer!"
We scratched a run in the top of the first. Danny Moore walked and moved to 2nd on Art White's base hit. Danny scored when an attempt to pick off Art at first went down the right field line.
Bobby Scott started. He looked good, even after a couple of hits. But with a couple of runs across and a runner on third, he bounced a curveball that got by Bill Jones. When Bobby pushed off to go cover the plate, he went down in pain. Turns out he severed his achilles tendon.
We got one of the runs back in the second after Randy Cobb led off with a triple to right. We went ahead 5-3 in the top of the third. Danny walked and stole second. Art drove him in with an infield double. (Yup, popup in the infield that everybody went for, nobody caught, and both home and second were left uncovered.) Tom Squier drove in Artie, and then scored on a double steal.
Frank Bower drove in Randy Cobb in the top of the fourth to push our lead up to 6-3. Denny Brown was cruising after relieving Bobby in the first. That came to an end in the bottom of the fourth though. Five straight singles started the inning. The Dragons batted around before Zach Jones came in and stopped the bleeding. We were behind 11-6, but we knew it wasn't over.
We scratched another run in the fifth on Jim Gardner's sac fly to drive in Art. We tied it up with 4 in the top of the 6th, aided by a slew of Dragons errors. Danny got a two-out hit to drive in Dutch Van Wey with the tying run.
We grabbed the lead with 3 runs in the top of the seventh. Tom led off with a hit and stole second. Jim drove him in. Frank's base hit drove in the third run of the inning.
Meanwhile, Zach cruised through the middle innings. With one out in the eighth, Zach plunked the leadoff hitter (Kevin Walker) and walked the #2 hitter (Rich Hinkle), bringing up Doug Thompson, who had tripled in the first inning. We went to Tom to put out the fire. He got the dangerous Thompson to pop out for the second out. But then another hit batter, a base hit, and a walk scored two runs and had the bases loaded. Tying run at third, winner at second. Tom got a K to end the game and preserve the win.
