We finished with a 1-3 record. Our three losses were to very good teams.
The tournament started with a downpour on Thursday, washing out our scheduled doubleheader. In fact, all of the Thursday games were rained out. To recover, all of the games in Father-Son were cut from 9 innings to 7 innings. We ended up playing two on Friday and two on Saturday. If we had made the playoffs, we would have had two more Saturday games in order to get to the finals.
We opened with a 4-0 win against the DC Nationals. Ron Mosley started and went the required 3 "father" innings. He allowed only one hit and faced only 10 hitters. Steve Stasiefsky Jr. pitched the back half, preserving the shutout. He also gave up only one hit. We got on the board via Eric Jones' base hit in the 2nd inning driving in Rich Hinkle, who had walked to open the inning. We added 3 more runs in the 4th. Pat Brown and Ron Mosley got one-out singles to get us going. Steve Jr. stroked a double to drive in the first run. Eric Jones drove in another run with a ground ball to second. The third run scored when the second baseman made a wild throw trying to retire Eric.
We lost the nightcap 10-5 to the Oregon Donors. Denny Brown started and gave up 4 runs in the first. The first four batters got hits, but then Denny settled down and got out of the inning. We bounced back in the bottom of the first with three runs of our own. A walk, two infield errors, Ron Mosley's base hit, and a balk did the damage. Jake Levine led off the 3rd with a double. Buster Brown followed with a base hit to get us even. Buster later scored to put us up 5-4. We held the lead into the 6th. Two hits and two errors chased Denny. Eric Jones relieved and might have gotten out without further problems, but another error prolonged the inning. When it was finally done, Oregon had scored 5 to open a 9-5 margin. They scored another run in the top of the seventh to close out the scoring at 10-5.
We faced a very good team, the Terre Haute Volkers, in our Saturday morning game. They killed us, 24-0. Enough said.
In our final game, we lost to the LA Athletics, 12-3. They scored 6 in the bottom of the first. We answered with one in the 2nd and two in the 4th. But that was it for us, and they got 2 in the 5th and 4 in the 6th to put the game away.
From our division, the LA Athletics and Oregon Donors made the playoffs. Terre Haute's loss to the Donors kept them out of the playoffs. Interestingly, both teams from our division went all the way to the finals. The Athletics beat the Donors 5-2 to take the title. As it ended up, we scored as many runs (3) against the Athletics as any of their opponents. They gave up 1, 1, and 0 runs in the other three round robin games, and then gave up 3, 1, and 2 in the playoffs. Similarly, our 5 runs against the Donors were as many as they allowed. They gave up 5, 4, and 3 in the other round robin games and 3, 3, and 5 in the playoffs. So we were pretty competitive offensively, but pretty offensive defensively. :-)

We finished with a 5-2 record. We started the playoffs as the #4 seed with a record of 4-1. We won our first round game on Friday, but lost to the #5 seed Tampa Stars on Friday night. Detroit won the tournament again, beating the Kansas City Cubs 2-1 in the finals. Detroit finished 7-1; we gave them their only loss in three years of the 55+ division.
Randy Olson was chosen as our team MVP. He hit .xxx (x for y), pitched well, and played great outfield for us throughout the tournament. Mike Rezzonico led the team in hitting with .xxx average (x for y).
We opened with a hard-fought 13-12 victory over the Huntsville Rockets. Ron Monks started and went 6 strong innings.
We started the scoring with three runs in the top of the first. Randy Olson led off with a double. Mike Rezzonico followed with a base hit to drive in Randy. After a force out and an infield error, Zach Jones drove in the third run of the inning. We added single runs in the 3rd and 4th, and gave up an unearned run in the 3rd.
Our 5-1 lead disappeared in the bottom of the 5th. 2 singles and a triple to right scored the first two of the inning. An infield error, hit batter, and sac fly scored the other two. We answered back with three of our own in the 6th. Walt Boggan's double drove in Zach, who had reached on an error, and moved Jesus Williams to third. Jesus scored on Sal Esposito's base hit. Huntsville scratched another run in the sixth with the help of a couple of our errors. Randy and Mike again combined to get that run back. This time Randy singled and Mike doubled.
After Ron gave up a couple of hits in the seventh, it looked like he was getting tired. Randy came in but Huntsville was able to push across two runs. We still had a 9-8 lead going into the eighth. Huntsville scored two in the 8th to pull ahead 10-9. A walk, error, and a couple of sacrifices resulted in the two runs.
Down one going into the ninth, Rick Kramer led off with a walk. Denny Brown and Rick played hit-and-run putting runners on the corners. Randy tied it up with a base hit. Mike put us ahead with another hit, and Tom Squier drove in two big insurance runs to finish the scoring.
Huntsville battled back in the bottom of the ninth. Two hits, two of our errors, and two K's plated two runs with two outs. With the tying run on third and the potential winning run on second, Rick made a diving catch in short left field for the game-saving third out.

In game 2 we faced the defending 55+ champion Detroit 50's. Detroit had a 16-game win streak going in. They won the tournament in 2002 and 2003, going undefeated each year.
Clyde Jones threw a great game and we played nearly flawless defense behind him to hand Detroit their only loss of the tournament.
Clyde struggled a little in the first inning, giving up 3 hits and a walk. But Jeff Brown threw out an attempted steal, and Clyde limited the damage to a single run. We got that right back in the bottom of the first. Randy Olson led off with a single, and Zach Jones drove him in with a two-out base hit.
We scratched another run in the third. Randy (again!) led off with a single. Tom Squier grounded into a force and later scored on another two-out RBI by Zach.
Our lead was short-lived, however. Detroit got two in top of the fourth by putting together three hits and a sacrifice. They added another run in the sixth on two base hits.
Down 4-2, we struck for 6 big runs in the sixth. Denny Brown started the rally by getting on via an error. Steve Ceriani stroked a double over the right fielder's head. Rick Kramer drove in a run with a hit. Jesus put us ahead with a two-run single. Walt Boggan, Rich Menise, and Randy all added RBI hits.
Clyde got stronger with the 8-4 lead. He got 4 of his 7 strikeouts in the final three innings, one with the bases loaded and one out in the 7th and one to end the game.

Dutch Van Wey kept us on our winning streak. He pitched 5 innings allowing only 4 hits and one unearned run. Our bats stayed hot and we played good defense to put the game away. Zach Jones and Tom Squier eached pitched an inning to get the eligible for pitching in the playoffs.

Randy Olson got us on the board in the first inning with a hit and a stolen base, and scoring on a passed ball. Jesus Williams drove in Tom Squier with a sac fly to put us up 2-0. We got two more in the third on consecutive hits by Rick Kramer, Randy Olson, Mike Rezzonico, and Tom Squier.
Denny Brown started and pitched well into the 4th. Two errors leading off the 4th put him in trouble. After getting a couple of outs, two base hits tied the score at 4-4. NJ took the lead with a run in the 5th, but we escaped a bigger inning when Tom's relay after a base hit cut down the runner trying for second. Two more unearned runs in the 6th put us in a 7-4 hole.
We regained the lead in the 6th with a 4 spot. Mike led off by getting hit by a pitch (what's new?). Walt Boggan drove in two runs with a clutch hit and later scored when Clyde Jones was hit by a pitch.
We couldn't hold the lead though. With one out and a runner on second, we got a ground ball to Tom at short. The runner tried to advance and Tom nailed him at third. But Jesus dropped the ball. We all thought the drop was on the exchange as he came up ready to throw. But the umps ruled otherwise and NJ had runners on the corners. We brought in Randy to put out the fire. The next hitter dropped a nice bunt that Randy fielded and threw to first. The throw took Mike into the baseline and into a major collision with the runner. Both runners scored and the batter ended up at third. A double and another single resulted in their 4th run of the inning.
Randy got us another "legs" run in the bottom of the inning, scoring on a couple of wild pitches. We mounted a threat in the bottom of the eighth, loading the bases, but couldn't break through with the big hit this time.

LP: Denny Brown (6 1/3 IP)
We were hoping for a win in the "placement" game to ensure a high seed and maybe a first-round bye in the playoffs.
We jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first. Denny Brown drove in two with a bases-loaded single. Steve Ceriani added a two-run double. Jeff Brown's sac fly plated the fifth run.
Zach Jones pitched three good innings giving up only one hit. But his leg injury acted up in the fourth, so Denny came in and finished the game.
Ahead 7-1 going into the bottom of the seventh, we broke through with 4 runs to get to the 10-run spread and end the game. Randy, Mike, and Tom set the table and Denny, Jesus, and Walt drove in the runs.

Saturday, 10/2. We lost a doubleheader to the Cardinals, 17-11 and 13-6. The Cards scored 6 runs in the second inning of the first game to go ahead 7-0. We fought back getting close at 8-6, 10-8, and 13-11, but couldn't get all the way back. The second game was similar. This time they scored 5 in the second and eventually got ahead 13-0. We scored 5 in the seventh and one in the eighth to make it interesting, but again couldn't get all the way out of the early hole. The quick summary is that the Cards outplayed us in both games; we had more defensive miscues than they did, and they got more timely hits than we did. We'll just have to wait til next year. :-)
Sunday, 9/26. We won our playoff game against the Crushers, 17-2. The Cardinals beat the Ports, 9-4, so we'll hook up with the Cardinals next weekend in a best of 3 seires.
The Pirates beat the Cardinals on 9/7, so we finished the regular season in first place in the TriValley 48+ Division. Our record (17-5) was one game better than the Cardinals (15-5-2). The Ports finished in third with a 13-7-2 record. The Crushers took 4th at 11-11. The Pirates narrowly missed the playoffs at 9-11-2. See the TV Antiques schedule for the playoff schedule.
Labor Day weekend. We went 1-2 in the Woodland Davis Tournament on Labor Day. We opened with a loss to the San Jose 50's. We gave up 7 unearned runs in the first inning and lost 15-5. On Sunday morning, we lost to Fog City. Another big first inning did us in, but this time it was "only" 6 runs. Final score was 16-2. We salvaged a win in our second game on Sunday, beating the TV Pirates 12-3. Rich Battiato pitched a strong 8 innings, and we played pretty good defense behind him. Our bats finally came alive. Fog City went 3-0 to claim the first seed in Division 1, beating San Jose on Sunday afternoon 12-11. San Jose had the second seed with a 2-1 record. The Pirates, Fresno Grizzlies, and Antiques all finished 1-2. In the other bracket, the Woodland-Davis Yankees went 3-0 for the first seed in Division 1. The Greenwood Ridge Dragons claimed the second seed with a 2-1 record. The TV Tigers and Sac Old Gold finished 1-2, with the TV Crushers going 0-3. When I left Woodland, the San Jose guys were beating the W-D Yankees something like 13-2 in the eighth, and the Fog City-Dragons game was a one run deal in the seventh inning. Fog City ended up beating the Dragons by one run in the bottom of the ninth. San Jose beat Fog City in the finals, 22-7. San Jose had some fresh arms, and Fog City didn't.
Sunday, 8/29. The TriValley Antiques closed the regular season with a win, 18-12 over the Athletics. This clinched at least a tie for first place in the regular season. The Norcal Antiques also closed with win over the Fairfield Vipers, 19-7.
Sunday, 8/22. The TriValley Antiques beat the Pirates 7-6. We trailed most of the game, but scored 3 in the bottom of the eighth to tie the game at 4-4, and then 3 in the bottom of the ninth to pull out the win.
Sunday, 8/15. The TriValley Antiques beat the Yankees 17-8. The game see-sawed through the early innings. The Yankees got close at 9-8, but we scored 7 in the top of the ninth to seal the win.
Sunday, 8/8. The TriValley Antiques swept a doubleheader from the Crushers. We won both games in the seventh inning. We won the first game 9-3 after a 7-run outburst in the top of the seventh. We won the second game 9-8 by scoring a run in the bottom of the seventh.
Sunday, 8/1. The Norcal Antiques lost to the San Leandro Oldtimers 11-2. The TriValley Antiques beat the Cardinals 10-6.
Sunday, 7/25. This was our first weekend with three games on Sunday. The Norcal Antiques lost to the Vallejo A's 11-3. The TriValley Antiques split a doubleheader with the Ports. We lost the first game 6-5 when the Ports rallied for 4 runs in the bottom of the seventh. We came back to win the second game 8-7.
Sunday, 7/11. The Norcal Antiques lost to the San Jose Oldtimers 12-7. We gave up 6 unearned runs in the first inning and were not able to make up the ground. The TriValley Antiques beat the Athletics 22-5.
Sunday, 6/27. The Norcal Antiques lost a tough game to the Modesto Reds, 12-11. We jumped out to a 7-run first inning. We held the lead until the bottom of the eighth. Modesto scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth to tie things up at 11-11. Then they pushed over a run in the bottom of the ninth.
Sunday, 6/20. The TriValley Antiques swept a doubleheader from the Pirates. Bobby Scott tossed a shutout in a 4-0 win in the first game. We won the second game 11-8.
Sunday, 6/13. The TriValley Antiques beat the Yankees 12-4.
Sunday, 6/6. The TriValley Antiques lost 8-7 to the Crushers. The Norcal Antiques beat the Lodi Oldtimers 27-8.
Memorial day weekend. The Antiques won the Las Vegas Open 55+ division championship with a 5-4 win over the South Dakota Rushmores.
Sunday, 5/23. The TriValley Antiques split a doubleheader with the Cardinals. We lost the first game 4-1 and won the second 6-4.
Sunday, 5/16. The Norcal Antiques tied with Fairfield, 9-9. The TriValley Antiques lost to the Ports, 10-4.
Sunday, 4/25. The TriValley Antiques won a doubleheader against the Athletics, 13-2 and 10-4.
Sunday, 4/18. The Norcal Antiques lost to the San Leandro Oldtimers 8-4. The TriValley Antiques beat the Pirates 10-3.
We now have a practice schedule for every weekend between now and opening day for each team.
So that everybody is on the same page... I don't consider any of the practices "mandatory". The purpose for arranging for the practices and practice games is to enable those who want to practice to do so. You can choose to come to all of the practices, or only a couple, or only the ones close to where you live, or whatever.
Zach might have a slightly different idea, and might designate one or more practices as important for the TV Antiques to attend. I'll talk to Zach this weekend.
But it is important to get your MONEY turned in. We have to pay TriValley fees by Feb 16. So send the money to Sal right away!
Please let me know which practices you plan to make (or not make).
Please send your fees to Sal at:

Sal has arranged for us to join the San Jose Oldtimers for their practice on Sunday, 2/8, at 10 am at West Valley College.
It is NOT mandatory in any way. If you want to join us, you're welcome to do so. We hope to split up and have a short intra-squad game. Not necessarily an Antiques vs. SJ game, just split up whoever shows up.
Show up time is 10am. We'll do a bit of BP and IF/OF and then get the intrasquad game going.
Please let me know if you plan to make it.

It's time to get started on the 2004 season! There's plenty of news, so here goes.
We will have two Antiques teams this year. We'll continue to play in the 48+ division of the TriValley MSBL. Most of last year's team will return to play on that team. In addition, we'll have a separate team in Norcal.
"What's going on?", you ask.
Last year at the Father-Son tournament, the my son, Pat, and Bill Jones's kids,
Eric and Brian, said that they would like to have us all play together next
season. In addition, Bill and I both want to play fewer weekends than we have
for the past couple of seasons. So, I went to the Norcal meeting in December
and entered an Antiques team in Norcal. We have 9 games on our schedule right
now, with the possibility of playing one or two more. All of our games are "away";
we'll split the cost of each of these away games with the host team.
Meanwhile, Zach Jones has agreed to be the field manager for the TriValley Antiques. Gus Manning has offered to handle the administrative stuff with the TV league. I went to the TV managers' meeting on Sunday, January 12. The short story is that not much will change for next year. It will still be wood bats. 22 game schedule, with top 4 teams making the playoffs. The TV Tigers will move down and play 38+ next year. The Dragons from Santa Rosa are dropping out of the league. The Pirates, a 38+ team last year, will have two teams next year, one in 38+ and one in 48+. Rick Hubbs, manager of the Pirates, will also be the 48+ commissioner.
"What will it cost this year?"
I'm proposing three choices. I'm open to suggestion if others have opinions.
| Code | Cost | League | # of games | Notes | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| A | $300 | TriValley | 22 + playoffs | ||
| B | $150 | Norcal | 9 or 10 | ||
| C | $300 | Norcal (primary) +TriValley (secondary) |
?? | Commit to Norcal on dates with conflicts. Play some dates with TriValley with manager's approval. |
|
To balance the budget, we'll need 16 players for code A, where a code C player counts as half. We'll need 15 players with code B or C.
"Who will play on each team?"
Most of you responded to my December survey via email saying that your first
choice for next year was the TV 48+ league. So, I expect that most of you will
go that way. I've talked to a few of you who want to play the shorter schedule
in Norcal. Here's my current best guess. I'll update this as I hear from each
of you.
| Code | League | # | Players | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A | TriValley | 9 | Randy Cobb, Sal Esposito, Jim Gardner, Zach Jones, Gus Manning, Dan Rowan, Tom Squier, Julian Lopez, Sandy Speier | |
| B | Norcal | 9 | Bill Jones, Eric Jones, Brian Jones, Pat Brown, Art White, Hank Bataille, ?? Rezzonico, Chris Weiler, Tom Ledda, John Piccolati |
|
| C | Norcal (primary) +TriValley (secondary) |
2 | Denny Brown, Mike Rezzonico | |
| U | Unknown, undecided | 8 | Frank Bower, Dave Distad, Phil Montes, Danny Moore, Robin South, Augie Torres, Dutch Van Wey, Bobby Scott | |
| X | Not playing this year |
If you're in the "unknown, undecided" group, please let Denny know know what you're planning as soon as you decide.

The Antiques NEWS is back.
Some of you have asked about the results from the post-season tournaments. I've started writing up the various tournaments. Check out the tournament results summary page for information on our 2003 tournaments.
I also distributed a survey by email to help find out what each of you prefer regarding next year. I've heard from many of you; anybody who has not responded, please do so as soon as you can. We're already planning for next year. Email Denny if you have any questions.
